“City of Thieves” by David Benioff
To be concise: I liked this book.
The book describes events in Leningrad in the winter of 1942. The city is surrounded by the Germans and its population, as reduced as it is, is starving. There are no alien monsters but there are cannibals, NKVD officers and nightly aerial bombardments and artillery barrages..
In the midst of all this the protagonist has to cross the lines into German occupied areas. A strange story but I have heard stranger.
The book is well written and is riveting from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
